Johnny Mercer wrote lyrics or music for more than 1,500 songs in a career spanning nearly 50 years, making him one of the most successful songwriters of the twentieth century. One of the most versatile lyricists ever, he penned catchy words for everything from bouncy numbers “Goody Goody” and mysterious mood setters “That Old Black Magic” to romantic love songs “Moon River”. Mercer was once quoted as saying that his songwriting success was due to his “feeling for tunes, no matter where they come from.” This “feeling” helped him forge effective partnerships with a wide variety of composers over the years, among them Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Henry Mancini, Rube Bloom, and Michel Legrand.
John Murelle, singer, teacher & historian brings together his love for singing and the American songbook in a program that explores the brilliance of Johnny Mercer. His care and passion for this truly American art form is evident in tight musical presentation and his careful and entertaining research. Much more than a program of song, John does a “deep dive” into the man who won four Academy Awards for the best song of the year, and countless nominations. His songs have been recorded by the who's who in American pop music.
Unusual Suspects band members are: Lily Ellsasser, vocals; Cameron Long and Zoe Simmons, guitar; Mason Ellsasser, bass; Evan Melano, keyboard; and Brady Smith, drums.
